GRASSHOPPERS GOT YOU DOWN?

GET NOLO BAIT!

What is NOLO BAIT?

NOLO BAIT is a biological insecticide registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use on 58 species of grasshoppers, locusts, and some species of crickets. Unlike chemically-based insecticides, NOLO BAIT contains a naturally-occurring spore called Nosema locustae, that infests grasshoppers. The disease that results from this infection is activated once the spore is ingested by grasshoppers.

NEW PALMETTO ST. AUGUSTINE

Palmetto St. Augustine is a patented turf grass with an outstanding green color and Brown Patch disease resistance. once established the massive root system provides superior drought tolerance. Shade is not a problem for palmetto. Excellent cold tolerance down to below 10 degrees is common. Palmetto is generally considered a low maintenance turf suitable for residential, as well as, commercial use. Contact Steglich Feed & Farm Supply, Inc. for delivered prices on pallet quantities.

FIRE ANT CONTROL TIPS

In every Fire Ant mound there is only one ant in 250,000 that needs to be eliminated to effectively control the entire population of the colony. The queen ant is the replacement ant production machine in every ant hill.when she quits producing new workers for the ones that are killed or die from natural aging the mound is doomed!

Getting to Her Majesty is a feat as complicated as any plot from a spy movie. The queen is housed deep in the mound and protected by legions of suicide prone guards. Any thing presented to the queen has been tested and retested by many worker ants to insure that no harm comes to the queen.

So, fast acting poisons will kill ants but almost never the queen. Generally, a large kill of the workers will lead to low attendance at roll-call and trigger the queen's egg laying schedule into overtime to replace the lost workers. It may also lead to the mound being moved to a safer location. In time the population of that mound will be even larger than before in anticipation of another massive loss workers.

The best Defense for Fire Ants doesn't kill ant's, rather it focuses on birth control for the queen.Hi-Yield Logic Fire Ant Bait should be the product of choice. When properly applied (to dry ground when outside temperature is less than 90 degrees F and greater than 70 degrees F) This bait will pass though the test ants and be fed to the queen and stop her egg laying and reduce the hatch rate of any eggs that she may manage to produce. with no replacement coming into the work force the colony is powerless to stop the ever downward spiral in mound population.

We all want to get rid of these pests immediately ( if not yesterday ) . a good way to speed up the is to wait about 10 days or 2 weeks after the Hi-Yield Logic application and apply a liberal dose of Hi-Yield 5% Diazinon Granules or spray the area with Hi-Yield Dursban Concentrate to eradicate most of the remaining worker ants.

CARING FOR YOUR TURF

When the fall weather arrives. With the cooler temperatures comes the fungi that will thin of kill the lush St.Augustine that you have been pampering all summer. These Fungi are always here, but when the night time low temperature gets below 70 degrees they really come alive and attack your grass.

Brown patch and Dollar spot are the most common diseases in in this area. There have been some incidence of Take-all fungus reported, but I have not seen any verified cases myself.

This year you can get the upper hand with these diseases by applying Terraclor and Bayleton, now, so that they will be incorporated into the soil when the fall rains come.

Fungicides are prevention's, not cures! Therefore, to have maximum effect. they should be applied BEFORE the grass starts to get sick. You may ask "How do I know if I will have a turf grass disease if you apply the fungicide before the symptoms occur?" . Well, if there has been damage in your grass in previous years you can bet that the disease will be present every year to some extent. This stuff will not just give up on it's own, you have to force it out of your grass.

If your lawn is the focal point of your residence overseeding with a perennial rye will give the turf appeal all year long. Scalp the grass in September or October prior to overseeding and use a drop seeder to plant 10# to 25# of rye grass seed per 1000 sq. ft. Top dressing with 1/2 in. of sand will help insure a thick stand so ryegrass, but is not essential. Fertilize with a complete blend plant food and keep watered for 5 to 7 days. For the next 10 to 14 days it is important to keep the seedlings moist, but not soaked, while they get established. Being mowing wen the rye grass reaches the height you wish to maintain, probably 1 1/2 to 2 in., and mow once weekly in winter. During the spring cutting the grass will most likely be stepped up as growth increases.
