  Things To Do

August

Fresh bedding plants have arrived! A variety of garden seeds are in stock!

There are new products to help make gardens as beautiful as possible with a minimum of effort or preparation. Our staff can help you with any special problems. Personal service is a rare commodity in the large chain store environment but not here at Steglich Feed & Farm Supply, Inc.

NOW!

Vegetables -- Plant broccoli, collards, cabbage, turnips, and onions. Sugar snap and English peas can be direct sown now.

Lawns -- Fertilize with a 15-10-5 with micro-nutrients at a rate of about 5# per 1,000 sq. ft. for the first application. Always use a calibrated spreader to insure an even distribution. Never just chunk-out fertilizer by handfuls and expect a pretty yard.

Houseplants -- Gently clean the foliage to remove any dust from the top and bottom of the leaves. Then feed with a time-release fertilizer to ensure proper nutrition for the growing season ahead.

Fire Ants -- Now is the time to use Logic Fire Ant control to get the best results. Avoid application to damp soils. Try to apply when the ants are actively foraging.

ANNUALS

Light Shade -- Alyssum, Phlox, Pansy, Cleome, Snapdragon, Coleus, Nasturtium

Medium to Partial Shade -- Begonia, Nicotina, Impatiens, Stock, Salvia, Vinca, Forget-Me-Not, Monkey Flower, Canterbury Bells

Annuals for Cutting -- Aster, Celosia, Marigold, Poppy, Dianthus, Verbena, Sweet Pea, Snapdragon, Zinnia, Larkspur, Cosmos, Candytuft

ESTABLISH NEW FLOWER BEDS

Do you ever wish there was a short cut to preparing a site for a new flower bed? Good news! All you have to do is develop a permanent barrier that will stop the lawn grasses from poking through from below.

Pick your site carefully so the type of plants you wish to grow get the proper sun, moisture, and protection from the elements.

Next, put up some sort of edging to hold your barrier in place and keep the boundaries clearly marked for the mower and edger. I like to use the flat metal edging since it is easy to put down and reusable should you want to move it to another place later.

Fertilize with about 3# of a balanced blend like 13-13-13 with micro-nutrients per 100 sq. ft.

Then, put a good thick weed barrier cloth like the super thick Pro 5 that we sell. When covered with a thick layer of bark mulch Pro 5 is indestructible (almost) and unaffected by the sun.

Even bermuda grass will be hard pressed to break through the Pro 5 and 5" or 6" of mulch.
