The high tillage fields lost soil to erosion at a rate 31 times of the conservation tillage area. More farmers using reduced tillage and leave at least 30% of the crop residue in the field after planting. Residue reduces soil erosion and the amount of fertilizer required to produce the next crop.Today, farmers are practicing reduce tillage on 100 million acres to improve soil quality and reduce erosion. In addition, 26 million acres are farmed in strips to further prevent erosion. A reduced-tillage or no-till field will save six-tenths of an inch of water per acre per year. BIG DEAL, HUH!
